Born in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) in 1978, Alfonso Gómez started playing piano by the age of five. He studied in the “Jesús Guridi” Conservatory in Vitoria-Gasteiz under Albert Nieto, where he graduated with the “Premio de Honor”, the highest distinction. In 1997 he received a scholarship to study with Aquiles delle-Vigne at the Conservatory in Rotterdam (Holland). He completed his “Soloist Diploma” in 2001 with the highest honors. With the help of a new scholarship, he then went to Freiburg (Germany) to study with the renowned professor Dr. Tibor Szász, where he once again graduated with the highest honors.
Mr. Gómez distinguished himself in numerous national and international competitions, receiving for example first prize in the “J. Françaix Piano Competition” (Paris, France), “Ciudad de Guernika Piano Competition” (Spain), “Gerardo Diego Piano Competition” (Soria, Spain), and “Erasmus Kamermuziek Prijs” (Rotterdam, Holland).
He has given numerous recitals in Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Taiwan and South Korea. He performed with orchestras in Europe and Asia including Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Euroasian Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Young Philharmonic, Gyounggi Philharmonic, Aita Donostia chamber orchestra, Freiburger Hoschschulorchester and Orkest van Utrecht, under the baton of conductors Roy Goodman, Nanse Gum, Jurjen Hempel, Juan José Mena, Jonathan Kaell, Scott Sandmeier in repertoire including works by W. A. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, and Bartók.
His repertoire is large, ranging from the baroque to the contemporary. He premiered several works by contemporary composers, and composers such as Martin Bergande, Sergio Gutiérrez Rodríguez and Arístides Llaneza have wroten works for him. He is also pianist of the contemporary music ensembles "Sinkro" (Vitoria-Gasteiz), "Krater" (San Sebastián) and in 2008 he will collaborate with the renowned "MusikFabrik" ensemble (Cologne).
Mr. Gómez recorded a CD of Jean Fraçaix´s piano works for the French label “Erol”, as well as the complete piano works of Pedro Blanco on 2 CDs for the “Spanish Music Festival” in León (Spain). Soon will be published a new CD with piano works by basque contemporary composers for the label "Sinkro".
Radio stations in Spain, Holland and Germany have rebroadcast his concerts and recordings, and his performance of the piano concerto No. 2 Op. 83 by J. Brahms with Maestro Nanse Gum and Gyounggi Philarmonic in Sungnam Arts Center of Corea was shown several times on Korean television (Arte-TV).
Besides performing, Mr. Gómez is also active as a piano teacher. He gave several masterclasses at universities in Spain and Taiwan and in 2008 he is scheduled to give masterclasses in Germany, Taiwan, Southkorea and Spain.
His plans for these year include concerts in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Ukraine, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan and Korea.
